Families like Sarah’s need urgent assistance

With the cost-of-living crisis deepening, this Christmas will not be a time of joy and celebration for people like Sarah.

Last year, just before Christmas, Sarah and her family were told they had to move out of the house they were renting.

In the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, they were left with nowhere to go and little hope of finding somewhere they could afford.

“I honestly didn’t know how we’d survive,” Sarah says. “From where we were standing, the future was looking very dark.”

Poverty and disadvantage were quickly becoming the new normal for Sarah and her family.

But then Sarah reached out to Vinnies, where she received the immediate relief and lasting support she urgently needed thanks to generous people like you.

Please donate to provide a hand up to vulnerable people in urgent need this Christmas.

A growing need

The cost-of-living crisis has reached a worrying new low.

3.3 million people in Australia are currently living in poverty (that’s more than 1 in 8).¹

People are skipping meals so they can afford to feed their kids, pay their rent, and keep the lights on. Others are desperately searching for a safe couch to sleep on.

Thousands of families have reached out to Vinnies for the first time in recent months, while others are now regularly relying on short-term relief to survive long-term.

Without urgent support, many people risk being trapped in a long-term cycle of poverty and disadvantage.

Your gift today can help provide families like Sarah’s with immediate relief and the lasting support they need to rebuild their lives.

“Having Vinnies is almost like having another family. They’ve restored my faith in humanity and given me hope for the future.” - Sarah

How you can help this Christmas

For families like Sarah’s who are struggling to survive from one day to the next, Christmas can be an extra challenging time.

Many will simply not be able to do anything special for their kids because their rent and electricity bill is overdue. Others will be weighing up whether to skip a meal so their children can eat. Preparing a special Christmas meal is a luxury they won’t be able to afford.

Your donation this Christmas will help ease the pressure on struggling families by providing food, clothing and financial assistance to cover rent, utility bills and other essentials like medicines.

Funds raised through the Vinnies Christmas Appeal will directly support our core programs, providing vital assistance to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, poverty, and cost-of-living pressures.

*Many people coming to Vinnies have never had to ask for help before and can feel embarrassed that they need to. That’s why we change people’s names and details – to protect their identity and uphold their dignity.
