Families in crisis, like Joanne’s, need your support
Joanne is looking towards Christmas not with anticipation, excitement, or happiness, but with dread.
It's the fear of not being able to put a meal on the table on Christmas day. Of not being able to pay her bills. Of not being able to keep a roof over her daughter's head.
Joanne's family is one of the growing numbers of families who have been pushed into poverty this year by the spiralling cost of living and unaffordable housing.
“We couldn’t afford the groceries. So, I've had to use buy-now-pay-later. It’s crazy times. I don't know what this Christmas will hold,” says Joanne.
Help put joy back on the table for a family like Joanne's. Donate now to make sure they have food on the table, can keep the lights on, and have a roof over their heads.
Pushed below the poverty line
At first glance, most people would think Joanne's family shouldn’t be at risk. Joanne has a job as a social worker. Her partner Max works in retail.
Alarmingly, as is the case for so many people in our community, it isn’t enough.
Despite having two incomes, every dollar is eaten up by rising rent, fuel costs, bills, and Harper's schooling costs.
Without help, families like Joanne’s face the real risk of having to choose between food, bills and the rent.
More people than ever are being pushed below the poverty line. Where once there were 1 in 8 people living in poverty, there are now 1 in 7. ¹
This Christmas, families facing poverty – many for the first time – need your support.

“We wanted stability for our daughter, but we haven't even been here twelve months and our rent's been pushed up so much, we have to move out. We can't afford it anymore." - Joanne
Help people facing crisis this Christmas
Right across Australia, Vinnies is hearing from more families than ever before – families who never expected to be asking for help, but who simply have nowhere left to turn.
It doesn't have to be this way this Christmas.
Not for families finding themselves in crisis for the first time, or those who have been struggling for much longer. The rising tide of poverty is reaching further into communities, leaving more people, including families like Joanne’s, with nowhere left to turn.
Donate now so someone like Joanne won't spend Christmas day worrying about an empty fridge, how they'll pay a bill, or whether or not they can keep a roof over their heads.
Funds raised through the Vinnies Christmas Appeal will directly support our core programs, providing vital assistance to people experiencing or at risk of homelessness, poverty, and cost-of-living pressures.
